5 Signs You May Have a Cockroach Infestation In Your Home

August 14, 2015

Most types of cockroaches live in tropical climates, which means not many species live in Canada. However, Canada is home to 10 types of cockroaches, the most common being the American cockroach, the Oriental cockroach, the brown-banded cockroach, and the German cockroach.

Below, we share 5 troublesome signs of cockroaches that may indicate you have a cockroach infestation, and where to be on the lookout for cockroaches in your home.

1. You See Cockroaches During the Day

Cockroaches are nocturnal pests who like to live in dark, moist places, so if you see a cockroach during the day, it could mean a cockroach infestation. Cockroaches can be found in damp areas like cellars and basements, behind kitchen appliances like stoves and fridges, and even in your walls.

2. You Find Cockroach Droppings

A sure sign of cockroaches is cockroach droppings, which look like coffee grounds or ground black pepper. Check behind kitchen appliances and other hidden areas for cockroach droppings, since cockroaches prefer dark, hard-to-squeeze-into areas.

3. You Smell A Strange Odor

A serious cockroach infestation can give off an unpleasant odour that has been described as smelling musty and oily. If you notice your home suddenly has an odd smell that lasts a few days or more, check for other signs to see if you have a cockroach infestation.

4. Cockroach Eggs Appear Around Your Home

Cockroach eggs, also known as “oothecae,” can be found in small, hidden spaces, like behind furniture, under furniture, and even between books. Cockroach eggs are oval-shaped, and depending on the species, can range in colour from dark brown, light brown, dark or light reddish-brown.

5. You Spot Dead Cockroaches

There’s been a lot of debate as to which is worse: a live cockroach or a dead cockroach (if it were up to us, we’d pick neither). Nonetheless, alive or dead, both are signs of a cockroach infestation. Check under major kitchen appliances, in sinks, drains, and cabinets for dead cockroaches, as there are common places cockroaches like to hide.

If you notice any of these signs, you may have a cockroach infestation. Once cockroaches have moved into your home, they can be very difficult to get rid of without the help of a professional pest remover. Call Magical Pest Control at (905) 738-6676 today for a free consultation.
