The most common type of termite in Ontario is the subterranean termite. These types of termites burrow their way into homes, which is why they are dubbed subterranean. They are also called super termites because of their ability to wreak havoc with their feeding and burrowing habits, and because they form massive colonies (a mature colony can have a million individuals) that cause mass destruction.
What do Subterranean Termites Look Like?
Subterranean termites are typically white or very light brown in colour, depending on their location and feeding habits. They are usually around 3/8 and inch, though they can vary slightly. They have a two-part body, with a round head, and an oblong body with horizontal striations. Their head is often a few shades darker in colour than their body. Like most insects they have two antennae and six legs.
They are sometimes confused with flying ants, however ants have different shaped, smaller wings. They are also often confused with carpenter ants, because carpenter ants also create their burrows in wood, though they do not consume it like termites do. Carpenter ants are only similar in behaviour, however. They are much darker in colour (dark brown to black) and have a three-part body.
How Do You Spot Signs of Termites?
Spotting signs of termites is actually quite simple if you know what to look for. In most cases you won’t actually be looking for signs of termites, but rather the aftermath that they leave behind. Since termites are nocturnal, and usually burrowed deep within wooden structures they aren’t readily visible, until significant structural damage has already accrued.
Other signs to watch out for:
- Small mud tubes
- Scraping sounds – termites are quite noisy, especially when they come in mass numbers. If you put your ear to the wall or floor, you may hear gentle scraping sounds as termites gnaw and feed on wood.
