Cockroaches are not native to Canada, but because of urbanization and global travel and trade, they have made their home in our food processing plants, restaurants and kitchens, hotels, stores and, unfortunately, our homes. Cockroach infestations are hard to fix without professional help, because they live in dark, inaccessible areas of a house and can survive off the smallest bits of food debris.
If you are looking for methods of cockroach removal, it’s best to know what kind of cockroach you are dealing with. Here are the most common cockroaches in Canada.
Strangely enough, this cockroach is not originally from Germany. It is the most common cockroach found in North America. This cockroach can be identified by the two dark lines behind its head. It is particularly hard to get rid of this pest, because it can remain hidden in the smallest cracks and gaps in floor tiles, walls and baseboards. It also has a high tolerance for chemical baits and poisons sold by retail companies, due to the overuse of these pesticides. Cockroaches in Canada have no natural enemies to keep their populations under control, so they reproduce rapidly, even in the best conditions.
Cockroaches also prefer to live near drains and places that are warm and damp. This makes bathrooms, kitchens and basements common roach refuges. Store-bought pesticides for this creepy-crawly may be ineffective and potentially dangerous if you have children or pets in the house. If you need to get rid of cockroaches, your best option is to call a professional cockroach extermination team.
The American cockroach is distinctive by its large size—about twice the size of the more common German cockroach. Fortunately, these cockroaches develop much more slowly and are not as hardy as their cousins. However, despite being an irritant pest, all cockroaches in Canada pose a threat to humans because they can carry diseases such as salmonella. A cockroach infestation is also dangerous because house dust containing cockroach feces or body parts can cause allergic reactions or asthma.
They can live off virtually anything they can find in a home including the glue on book bindings and glossy paper treated with starch. Keeping you home clean, and regularly taking our your trash and cleaning your garbage chute are key to get rid of cockroaches like these.
Also known as a water bug, the Oriental cockroach can be identified by its dark, almost black colour and shiny appearance. While not as common as the German cockroach in Canada, it is much harder to eradicate because they can survive extremely cold temperatures. They can be found under leaf groundcover or mulch in damp lawns and can migrate into homes when temperatures drop.
As its names suggests, the Brown-banded cockroach can be identified by the brown or yellowish band behind its head and by its smaller size. These types of cockroaches require less moisture than other cockroaches, so they can be found in living rooms or bedrooms, away from the traditional damp cockroach homes such as toilets and drains. These cockroaches prefer to stay hidden during the day and come out to feed at night. They have been detected in hospitals and can carry diseases between humans.
